Questions and answers
Why does a steel service door drag at the bottom?
Bottom-edge contact can result from changes in the position of the leaf, its hinges or its surrounding frame. It does not establish that the door itself is the only problem. Describe when the rubbing began and whether the floor or threshold was recently altered. Avoid grinding or cutting the door before the complete assembly is assessed.
Does a steel door automatically have a fire rating?
Material alone does not establish the specification of an opening. Existing labels, documents and the relationship between the door, frame and hardware need to be checked where a rated assembly is involved. Include visible markings with your enquiry. The required replacement should be confirmed for the building rather than inferred from the appearance of the old leaf.
Can rust damage be covered with a new finish?
A finish can change appearance but cannot be assumed to restore weakened material or damaged hardware attachment points. Describe where the corrosion is visible, particularly around edges, seams and fixings. An assessment should distinguish surface condition from deterioration that affects the assembly. The quote should identify whether preparation, repair, finishing or replacement is actually proposed.
Can the old hinges and lock be reused?
Reuse depends on their condition and compatibility with the retained frame or replacement leaf. Include the existing hardware arrangement and any visible model information. Ask which components are included in the proposed work and which remain. The final decision should consider how the entire entrance closes and secures, rather than whether an individual part still moves.
How should a delivery entrance be prepared for work?
Tell the property contact which entrance is affected and identify delivery periods, vehicle movements and stored materials around it. Discuss access arrangements before the appointment and keep the immediate work area available as agreed. Any alternative route needs to be suitable for the building's use. Do not assume the service door can stay operational throughout a replacement.
Can the existing frame stay in place?
Sometimes, but the frame must be assessed for condition, dimensions, attachments and compatibility with the proposed door. Keeping a damaged or unsuitable frame can undermine an otherwise appropriate replacement. Photographs can start the discussion; final measurements and the condition of concealed or inaccessible details may need to be established during the site assessment.
What measurements are needed before ordering?
Approximate dimensions are useful for an initial enquiry, but they are not an ordering specification. The complete opening, handing, hardware positions, clearances and frame arrangement need confirmation. Share existing drawings if available and identify any labels. Avoid buying a replacement solely from the size of the visible door or an internet photograph of a similar entrance.
Can my business remain open during replacement?
That depends on the entrance arrangement, the work involved and the building's access requirements. Explain whether a separate approved entrance is available and when deliveries or customers normally arrive. Discuss the proposed sequence before booking. Do not assume the affected opening will remain usable throughout removal, fitting and the final operational checks.
How do I describe several problems on one property?
Give each entrance a simple identifier and describe its symptom separately. For example, distinguish a front door that will not latch from a rear door with damaged hinges. Match photographs to those identifiers and note any shared access equipment. The same list can then help organize assessment, quotations and records of completed work.
Should all doors receive the same repair?
Not automatically. Similar appearances do not establish identical condition or hardware. Ask for the proposed work to be listed by door rather than assuming a problem at one opening applies to the others.
